Match Reports - Current Season

10/11/13 Malvern Town Ladies 1- 2 Knowle Ladies

Knowle Ladies set a club record of six consecutive wins with a hard fought victory away at Malvern. The Robins started poorly when a defensive lapse led to a Malvern goal within the first two minutes of the game. However this seemed to galvanise Knowle who then took control of the match with some good passing moves, and the partnership of Jo Davies and Amy Brownson on Knowle’s left side were particularly threatening. Knowle got their reward after 25mins; defender Mel Faulkner won the ball in her own half before carrying it deep into Malvern territory. She released Claire Richardson down the right side, who cut into the box and lashed an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net from 15 yards out. The sides went in at half time at 1-1 after both defences foiled any clear cut chances.

The second half was a real end to end affair as both sides gave their all to win the game. Player of the match Brownson nearly put Knowle ahead with a 40 yard mazy run that bamboozled four Malvern players but as she broke into the penalty area her shot did not have enough strength to beat the goalkeeper. A Malvern forward then hit the post with a snap shot but Knowle defenders Sophie Hull and Sam Smith dived in bravely to clear the rebound ahead of an opposition player. The resulting nasty collision left all three players hurt and unfortunately Hull, who had been excellent all game, came off worse suffering a badly broken arm. Her replacement was centre half Sarah Jones but she became a makeshift forward on her return to the side after a nine month injury lay off. This paid dividends for Knowle in some style; with ten minutes remaining the tireless Richardson charged down the right wing once again before playing a perfect cross into the box which Jones met with a towering header to give Knowle a 2-1 lead. The Robins defended resolutely to see the game out and ensure they remain unbeaten in eight games, and although the victory was marred by Hull’s injury, Knowle are now sitting in second spot in the league.

20/10/2013 Knowle Ladies 1-0 Redditch Utd – Country Cup

A Katie Smith goal was enough to see Knowle Ladies through to the next round of the County Cup with a 1-0 victory against Redditch United. Knowle piled on the pressure from the start of the game, pressing Redditch back into their own half. The Robins passing game served them well and they used the width of the pitch to good effect. Amy Brownson beat her full back on several occasions and put dangerous balls into the box. Good chances fell to Sarah Lawley and Anna-Marie Robinson, but the Redditch keeper stood strong and saved well. However the break through came when Robinson’s shot was parried out and the onrushing Katie Smith clipped the rebound over the goalkeeper to claim her first goal for the Ladies since moving up from the under 16 squad this year. The second half continued in the same vein but Knowle’s composure in front of goal continued to desert them and they failed to capitalise on their chances. Steph Hopcroft’s header hit the post, and fierce drive was well held by the away side’s keeper who put in an excellent performance all game. It was inevitable Redditch would also get their opportunities, but a commanding performance from the Knowle back four kept them at bay, dominating in the air and blocking any long range shots. The away side came closest with a deceptive in-swinging corner but Katy Smirthwaire reacted well to claim the ball on the goal line, ensuring the score line stayed at 1-0.
